It’s an impressive effect that is cool the first few times, but next to useless every time after that. But there’s also the ability to zoom in quite low, right to the individual buildings and Sims themselves. Maxis’ Glassbox engine is visually beautiful, when roads and buildings and other objects aren’t clipping through the map’s geometry, and there are all sort of shading and lighting effects that look amazing from a bird’s eye view. It’s the latter, in fact, that’s espcially puzzling, and particularly disappointing for fans of SimCities past. It’s remarkably satisfying to build a bustling city from scratch in just a few short hours, but it doesn’t take long to feel like you’ve hit a wall - sometimes literally, in the case of the 200,000-citizen cap, and the astoundingly small city limits with which you’re given to build.
In fact, the new SimCity feels like a game of trade-offs.
And though you’re given fine-grained control taxes, you’ll earn so much money with so little effort that its inclusion is practically moot. The new SimCity, however, rewards you for nearly everything. Knowledge came with time, however, and the game rewarded as much of it as I could spare to spend. What I remember of the SimCity from my youth is a game that was hard - not so hard that my single-digit aged self couldn’t play with some degree of success, but just punishing enough that ignoring some of the finer points of transit planning, zoning and residential/commercial density could break my game in a very serious way. Besides the occasional sick-faced Sim, it took me weeks of in-game time to realize that I had done anything wrong.
My favourite was the time I unwittingly placed a water filtration center in the middle of a polluted industrual zone, causing a large portion of the town to become sick. Or, when a mid-game foible left my factories without power, those in the affected zone remained for days before anyone thought to move out - and even then, the majority of factories remained. My Sims complain about crime constantly, for example, but despite having a single paltry police station for a city tens of thousands in size, the police seem to keep things in check. For a newcomer in the genre, the game might even feel complicated and difficulty, but not so much for veterans. In the end, it’s up to you whether SimCity has what it takes to keep you entertained. There are many different building models for houses, office buildings and factories, not to mention all sorts of terrain. The graphics are still pretty solid, and the cities actually look like something you might see out in the real world, for a change. Visually, the game does not look bad at all, although things get rather primitive if you zoom in too much. Individual people have complaints and requests as well, although it becomes rather annoying to listen to them after your city grows past a certain point. It is possible to buy and sell goods, as well as power and water, depending on what you need or have in excess. One of the more interesting additions is the fact that your city is now connected to other cities, which means that you can interact with them. Take an interest in the population living in your city Believe or not, the daunting task of arranging the water pipes was one of the quintessential components of the series. One of the complaints is related to how the water supply system works in this new version, because you can’t toy with pipes anymore. There are many changes when it comes to how the game is played, but the main idea is that some things are simpler when they shouldn’t be. It’s certainly more complicated than SimCity Societies, but compared to what players had to deal with in previous games, this is a walk in the park. The two ideologies clash together in a fiery explosion, and the result is something that does not appear to be right for anyone, regardless of past experience with the series.
SimCity is a new production from Maxis that tries to appeal to the hardcore public of the first few episodes, while also inviting new players to join in on the fun. City management games fall into the same category, although they can be rather stressful sometimes. They can also appeal to the creative side of gamers, since you only need to think about the few million Minecraft videos on YouTube to see how much people love to show the world their ingenuity. Sandbox games are the perfect companions when you want a bit of quiet time and a few hours of relaxation.
